Description

We are thrilled to be welcoming the award-winning Filipino-American composer, conductor, and singer Matthew Lyon Hazzard to Queen’s University for a weeklong residency, culminating in this spotlight performance of his work. This performance will feature Matthew as a guest conductor on several pieces along with the choir’s resident conductor, Darrell Christie.

Despite being only 33, Matthew’s award-winning work is praised for “exquisite text-setting” and for creating “stunning landscapes of sound,” that will fill the Isabel Performance Hall as 75 singers accompanied by string quartet and immersive projections bring his music to life. There’s even a choir of crystal glasses!

Much of Matthew’s music is based around ideas of connection: connection to each other, connection to the land, connection to our past, and to our future. His refreshing approach to choral music explores what group singing can be in the twenty-first century, making this a performance not to miss!
